Barnfield Farm is our 15 acre farm nestled in a very special spot in Upchurch, Kent and is the home of Barnfield Blooms. Within our nature rich boundary lies a large hay field, mature cherry orchard, a natural pond and now a dedicated plot on which we lovingly grow beautiful British flowers.
Everything is farmed sustainably and without the use of pesticides, and as a consequence, the native wildlife and ecosystems on our farm flourish. The ladybirds eat our aphids, the birds eat our snails and the frogs and toads from the pond eat our slugs. The bees pollinate our fruit trees and love our flowers as much as we do.
As darkness falls, the owls leave the shelter of the cherry orchard and swoop low across the hay meadow hunting for mice and voles. And we know they wouldn't be here if the food chain wasn't alive and well because of the sustainable, organic care of our land.
From gorgeous smelling Narcissi to stunning Dahlias, the flowers we have available to cut are constantly changing as the year progresses. Our main flower season starts in April and finishes once the first heavy frosts arrive – usually around late October. We do have flowers and foliage outside of these dates, but availability at these times is limited. All our flowers are cut late in the evening and are then left overnight in a cool, dark room so they can 'drink' fresh water. This ensures that the following morning, they are perfectly conditioned to be made into gorgeous bouquets and bunches of beautiful flowers which will last longer in your home. We fully subscribe to the values of 'Grown not Flown.'
Start with a clean vase filled with fresh water.
Take off any leaves that will sit below the waterline, otherwise these will decay and cause bacteria to form.
Cut at least 1cm off each stem. Cut at an angle to aid water absorption and place straight into the vase.
Display your flowers in a cool, light location, ensuring they are not in direct sunlight.
Keep away from other sources of heat or draughts as flowers are sensitive to extreme temperatures.
Top up the water in the vase daily, removing any faded flowers.
Every 2 to 3 days, re-cut the flower stems and replace the water with a fresh supply.
Treat yourself or someone you love to a fortnightly subscription of beautiful, seasonal flowers grown here at Barnfield Blooms. Trust us to pick the best seasonal flowers and foliage available from the farm and have them delivered direct to your door. For each choice there will be 4 deliveries in total.
All subscriptions will be delivered on a Thursday. Every order has it's own water source so if on the rare occasion that no one is there to take the delivery, the flowers will be fine. Just let us know before hand where you would like the flowers to be left for safe keeping - preferably somewhere shady and dry.
We can deliver for free to Upchurch and the surrounding villages and local towns. If you are unsure whether we can deliver to your chosen address please call us on 07402 002001 or email debbie@barnfieldblooms.co.uk before purchasing a subscription. Alternatively, subscriptions can be collected direct from the farm on a Friday. Let us know what suits you best! Our spring subscriptions will begin as soon as the spring flowers are in full bloom. You will be notified via email before your subscription begins.
